Nominations open for our first social media awards

May 10, 2012

Can you believe it? Social Media Breakfast Bangor is one year old. Back on June 2 of last year, a couple dozen friends joined us for some conversation and some bacon. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported the dozen breakfasts since – and we want to celebrate.

For our June 7 breakfast, we’ll be taking a break from our normal routine. We thought a great way to look back at the year would be to recognize some of the people who have been doing great things with social media; to do that, we’re going to be holding our first-ever social media awards.

Here’s how it’ll work. Between now and Monday, May 14th at noon, please nominate Bangor-area businesses (and individuals) for the following awards:

  • The Faceplanking Award: Who’s the most creative with their content? You see a new post or tweet that makes you smile and tell all your friends. It’s impossible to resist sharing the stuff that the recipient of the Faceplanking Award posts.
  • The Hashtagger Award: Who is the go-to person for their industry thanks to social media? Who has been able to build their reputation and expertise on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other networks enough so that their name is synonymous with the work they do?
  • The @ Award: Posting’s one thing, but engaging with your audience is another. The @ Award winner is always there with a reply or more info when someone interacts. Who’s the best at staying in touch with their own social media crowd on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks?
  • The 0-60 Award: Where’d they come from? Whether it’s a new business or a seasoned social media user who really took center stage on social media, the 0-60 Award winner has shown the power of generating conversation and buzz.
  • The Instabacon Award: Whether it’s through crafty Instagram photos or behind-the-scenes YouTube videos, the winner of this award is a master of integrating photos and videos into their social media world. Who makes a picture or video worth a thousand words?
  • (You can nominate more than once for every category.)

After we’ve received the nominations, we’ll post a final list next week. We’ll then ask you to cast your ballot for the winners in each category, and we’ll announce the winners at our June breakfast.

We have lots more info to share about our party next month, but for now, make sure you’ll be able to join us on June 7, and nominate away!

SMB Bangor #12: Search success

April 27, 2012

No matter what you’re publishing online, how your content looks to search engines is an important piece in the path to attracting new people to your site. For May’s SMBBGR, GWI’s Trevor Jones talked about a couple of ways to make your site more appealing to search engines and how you can increase the chances that searchers will find and click on your site in search engine result pages. He also covered how keyword research can dramatically affect how blog posts and other content show up on Google. He showed how adding blogs, videos, and photos to your mix can keep you a step above your competition.

Trevor Jones is the Director of Marketing and Product Development at GWI, a Maine-based provider of broadband Internet access, phone service, and cloud computing solutions for homes and businesses.

SMB Bangor #10: Attracting followers & finding conversations

February 27, 2012

We started March with a focus on followers – and we put two members of the SMBBGR organizing team in the spotlight with stories and tips for attracting new followers and finding ways to organize the people you follow.

First, we heard from Angelia Levesque of RE/MAX Advantage about how to attract a buzz around your product, whether it costs $5 or $100,000. From free subs to finding a new home, she has a unique perspective and history about marketing on social media in the greater Bangor area and beyond.

We also had Justin Russell of Sephone Interactive Media talk about how you can use lists and searches to your advantage on Twitter and Facebook. He spoke about how you can use Twitter’s search to find conversations you may be missing, and gave some ideas for lists that may help you tame the list of people you follow.

SMB Bangor #9: Blogging for business on a budget

January 26, 2012

We’re changing it up this month! We have a new location (thanks to the Center for Family Business at Husson) and some new choices for breakfast. We also have a great new speaker – but it’s someone you may recognize!

What’s a great, simple way to reach the world with your message, even if you don’t have a lot to invest at the start? Kristi Bartlett of CreativeKristi.com will show that blogging may be a perfect solution. Whether you’re looking to start a business, build a community, or expand your message online, she’ll explain how blogging can be a great way to reach a new audience — all without breaking the bank. She’ll also cover how she’s used social media networks to extend her message and find new connections.

Kristi Bartlett is a mom, a blogger, and a businesswoman. In addition to balancing parenthood and blogging since 2008, she’s helped clients worldwide with blogs and site designs. She’s involved with major blogging conferences at the national level and is committed to helping businesses grow online.

See you for breakfast! And don’t forget to use #SMBBGR on Twitter to let other people know and to share your say during the morning. Make sure you follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

Please take our survey!

January 18, 2012

Now that we have eight breakfasts on the books (can you believe it?), we thought it’d be a good time to ask for a little feedback. We’ve put together a survey of about a dozen questions we think would be really helpful as we plan our breakfasts moving forward.

It doesn’t matter how many breakfasts you’ve attended – or if you’ve attended any at all! We’d love your thoughts regardless of your history at SMBBGR. The survey should only take a few minutes to complete, and it would really help us!

You can fill out the survey at http://www.smbbangor.org/survey.

You’ll likely see some changes over the next few months – some small, some not so small – and we think this survey will help us get a better picture of what you want to see.

Thanks for your help!

SMB Bangor #8: Gadgets and tools for a new year

December 23, 2011

It’s time to plan for a new year! Are you thinking of the goals you’ll set for yourself and your business for 2012? Or did you receive a new gizmo for the holidays and wonder what you can do with it? We want to help you start on the right foot, and we have a great lineup to help you find some new tools to make the new year great.

First, we have Paul Hilchey-Chandler from Central Maine Wireless. Paul’s a fountain of information for anything you could want to know about the latest tools and apps for Android phones. We bet you’ll be surprised by the amount that some of the latest gadgets can do for you and your company.

We’ll also hear from Sephone’s Kelly Cotiaux. Kelly carries her iPad almost everywhere, and she’ll walk through some ways she’s used her tablet (and phone) to stay connected while she helps run a company from meeting rooms and coffee shops (and occasionally ski lodges) all around the state. She can also help you figure out if it’s time for your business to think about a mobile website (or even your very own app for iPhone and Android) and what it takes to build one.

Have questions about gadgets, apps for your device, or ways your business can go mobile? This breakfast is for you!

SMB Bangor #7: Building a business (and a fan base)

November 21, 2011

For our December breakfast, we’re leaving the turkey behind and focusing on the month ahead with a couple of our favorite Maine shops. We’ll hear from Kristen Andresen of Maine Maven in Orono and Maggi Blue from Chocolatier Blue and Magpie Creative about how they’ve been able to use social media and other tools to build and attract business locally (and created lots of loyal fans in the process).

Maine Maven in downtown Orono stocks a wide collection of gifts from all around the state of Maine: jams, shirts, bags, and much more. Chocolatier Blue’s Maine store in downtown Camden stocks a variety of tasty confections, and Magpie Creative uses glass and metal for unique creations of all kinds.

(Though this is the first time Kristen and Maggi have spoken at an SMB Bangor, they’ve been well-represented. We’ve seen goods from Kristen’s shop and jewelry from Maggi at almost every breakfast we’ve held!)
