SMB Bangor #55: Business in a Snap

August 23, 2016

Social Media Breakfast Bangor is back with a conversation about Snapchat!

Stories and video have emerged on multiple social media platforms as the way to interact on a personal level with your followers. How are organizations in the Bangor region using stories and video to successfully engage with followers? We’ve asked Kate Hills of ERA Dawson Realty to share her use and success with video, stories, and Snapchat.

Kate Hills has been working with the ERA Dawson Bradford Team since 2011 and is currently an Associate Broker. She was born in New Jersey but considers herself a Mainer. She resides in Hermon, Maine with her husband and their two children. In her free time, Kate volunteers at her children’s schools and helps care for people with disabilities in her home. She serves on the Greater Bangor Association of Realtors and a director, Fusion Steering Committee and currently is the chair for Fusion Bangor Sports.

SMB Bangor #54: Hashtags 101

March 31, 2016

For April’s Social Media Breakfast we’re going back to basics to talk about a social media fundamental: hashtags. The SMBBGR organizers will tag team to cover everything you need to know about the # you see in posts and tweets around the web, including:

Why do people use hashtags?

How do I add a hashtag?

Who owns a hashtag?

How can I see what people have posted with a hashtag?

How do I choose which hashtag to use?

They’ll also give real-life examples of how hashtags can be used to keep tabs of an event or campaign, and there will be plenty of time to answer any questions you may have about these often misunderstood tools.

Join us for the first SMB of the spring to learn how hashtags can help your social media presence grow from the ground up! #winning

SMB Bangor #53: 360 degrees of social media for nonprofits

February 19, 2016

We hear stories all the time about how big brands and corporations are using social media to strengthen their image and reach out to customers. But can nonprofits be a part of the social media party? This month we’ll welcome Pat Lemieux of the American Heart Association to talk about how nonprofits can use social media to their advantage. His presentation will cover how to use social media strategies and tactics to enhance events, volunteerism, donations, sponsorship, media coverage and board engagement for nonprofits.

After just shy of a decade at BDN Maine, Pat Lemieux now works as a Corporate Events Director for the American Heart Association. His experience involves live events, social media, sponsorship and donation acquisition, audience development, online marketing as well as traditional marketing and media. Pat blogs about business and social media on LinkedIn and parenting on his personal blog manchild, which can be found on bangordailynews.com. He also co-hosts a social media-focused podcast called the Social Dig Podcast which can be found at socialdigpodcast.com and on iTunes.

SMB Bangor 52: Social media <3 websites

February 3, 2016

February is the month of love, and for our February breakfast we’re looking at a perfect match in the tech world: social media and websites. Social media is a great tool to put your message in front of the eyes of people around your area – or around the world. But it can also be a useful way to drive visitors to your website to buy products, donate, subscribe to a newsletter, attend an event, or more by using carefully crafted calls to action.

Monique Bouchard and Leo Edmiston-Cyr from Rainstorm, Inc., will discuss how social media and websites can intertwine. Learn how you can use a call to action on your favorite social media network to inspire the people looking to visit your site and learn more or follow up. They’ll lead by example by showing how the Ocean River Institute’s integration of social and website drives successful advocacy for environmental changes.

SMB Bangor #51: Starting 2016 with Kindness

January 7, 2016

A new year is a great time to try some new ideas with social media. This month at Social Media Breakfast we welcome someone who has worked on her share of innovative ideas: Andrea Beaulieu from the Kindess Project and Linear. Through projects like the Street Piano, #bagsforbangor, #scavengebangor, and more, Andrea has used social media both as the sole method of promoting some projects and as a way to add to the marketing efforts of others for her clients at Linear.

Join us on January 21st to hear how Andrea’s projects have had an effect on the community, and learn some new ways to promote your own campaign using social media!

SMB Bangor #50: Taking charge of local search

October 29, 2015

We all know that being visible in search is a huge part of being successful online. But did you know you can put an extra focus on people who are searching for goods and services locally? Scott Traylor of Sephone Interactive Media joined us at our November breakfast to talk about how to make sure you’re seen by people who want to know the best options near them. He also covered how you can keep control of your business’s presence on the web with a practice known as digital presence management. How can you ensure your official business listing comes out on top of any duplicates or review sites?

Scott Traylor is a founding partner of Sephone Interactive Media and provides search consulting services to clients both large and small.  He is also is an Instructor of WebMedia at the New England School of Communications at Husson University where he has been teaching a course in Search Engine Marketing for many years being one of the first to offer such a course by an accredited higher education institution in the State of Maine.

SMB Bangor #49: Social media challenges and business opportunities

September 25, 2015

In September we heard from some Bangor’s local media about how they use social media to share local news and interact with viewers/readers. But what if your business doesn’t have an easy source of content or what you can post is regulated? In October we put together an all star panel of experts to discuss how they get creative to engage potential customers when their business doesn’t exactly lend itself to social media.

Marion Syversen is the owner and president of Norumbega Financial, a firm that provides investment advice, investments, college planning and retirement planning services for businesses and individuals. She is a licensed Registered Representative and Investment Advisor Representative. She received her B.S in two years, graduating with highest honors from Husson University. She received her MBA from Texas A&M and was privileged to be the school’s first distance-learning graduate. Marion appears weekly on WABI-TV5, Bangor, Maine’s CBS affiliate, and is a monthly contributing “Money” columnist for the weekly publication, The Maine Edge. Marion is the founder and Immediate Past-president of the Bangor, Maine chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), presently the only NAWBO chapter in ME, NH or VT. Find out more about Marion at NorumbegaFinancial.com and on twitter at @MarionSyversen.

Gary Jordan is a full service real estate agent in central Maine, and has over 30 years in residential design, construction, and engineering management and sales. He uses social media to communicate about properties to allow his clients maximum exposure for a large web audience quickly using Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, and You Tube. Find out more about Gary at garyjordan.masiello.com and on Twitter at @buymaineland.

Yury Nabokov is the Internet Marketing Manager for Machias Savings Bank, where he serves as a leader and subject matter for all issues associated with social media and Internet marketing. He is responsible for generating web site traffic growth and understanding emerging trends and technology. Find out more about Machias Savings Bank at MachiasSavings.com, and find Yury on Twitter at @yurynabokov.

SMB Bangor #48: How Maine’s big media companies are winning online

August 19, 2015

We’re all working overtime to stay in touch with our audience and provide them with content that keeps them engaged and coming back for more. The September Social Media Breakfast covered how the media pros in Maine are winning this battle. WABI TV5, BDN Maine and Maine Today Media command some of the largest and most active Facebook and Twitter pages in the state and continue to grow their reach even as Facebook and Twitter become more competitive for eyeballs.

Our panel discussion included the following topics:

  • Platforms of choice for business (and why)
  • Engagement levels and types of posts
  • Methods of success
  • Ways to “beat” Facebook’s algorithm
  • Trends
  • Future plans
  • Questions from attendees
Start your month off right by investing a breakfast into learning about all of the above and more.

SMB Bangor #47: Apples and apples: technology in education

July 24, 2015

We sharpened our pencils, charged our laptops, and brought Dan Ryder to Social Media Breakfast Bangor to talk about technology and education.

Whether you’re a teacher or not, this SMB was a fun morning of learning how educators (and others) can add technology to their daily routine in ways that make what they do more engaging and entertaining.

Dan Ryder is a 16-year veteran English teacher and improve coach at Mt. Blue Campus in Farmington, Maine. He’s also an adjunct instructor at the University of Maine at Farmington and teaches workshops on design thinking, technology integration, and improvisation throughout Maine and beyond. He’s the co-founder of Wicked Decent Learning, an education-based podcast and blog, and he’s also known to hang with the Teachers Lounge Mafia Improv crowd.
