SMB Bangor #33: Social media for your summer season

April 22, 2014

In Maine summer arrives fast and hard – and sometimes seems to leave just as quickly. Business owners all over the state have a brief window to capture people’s attention, time, and dollars before the temperatures drop, the leaves fall, and the tourists head back south.

This month’s breakfast will feature three presenters from different parts of the state that all see tremendous growth in the summer months. They work with many seasonal and year-round businesses and help them perfect social media strategies that get people thinking about their yearly visit to Maine.

You won’t want to miss out on this chance to learn how to maximize your business’s brand year-round to guarantee you get the maximum visitation possible in the summer months.

Abbie McGilvery is Communications Director for the Portland Regional Chamber. She is responsible for content creation and maintenance of social media marketing strategies on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter. She also performs graphic design and web design support for members, coordination and marketing of events and presentations and oversight of overall marketing strategy and messaging for the Portland Regional Chamber.

Ron Wrobel is Director of Marketing and Membership Sales for the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Ron is a very busy person who each year sees the explosion of business and tourists in Bar harbor and the surrounding Island towns. He works year round to market MDI as a destination for both in-state and out of state vacationers.

Lucas McNelly is a Marketing Strategist and Video Content Developer for Dream Local Digital. Based in the company’s headquarters in Rockland, Maine, Lucas will help clients with online marketing strategy, research, implementation and social media management. His focus is on telling businesses’ stories through video, giving them a new way to reach customers online. He has made a short film which currently has 1.7 million views on YouTube, directed 2 feature films, and has been a successful Kickstarter project creator and crowdfunding speaker.

SMB Bangor #29: Using social media for good

December 27, 2013

We’re starting out the new year by talking about how to use social media to benefit your community and its causes. How can you use your online presence to help with your business’s charity and giving campaigns?

We’ll be welcoming Andy Geaghan from the (SMBBGR Award-winning) Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company to talk about how they’ve used social media to spread the good of a variety of campaigns, including Champion the Cure, Bark for Life, and more. Jenifer Lloyd from the Champion the Cure Challenge will also be on hand for some perspective from the charity side. Join us and start your 2014 with ideas to benefit the community around you!

Founded in 1975, Geaghan’s Pub boasts a story of perseverance, hard-work, and commitment to community that has allowed it to remain important and relevant through multiple generations. In late 2010 after some time away pursuing a B.S. in Ecology and Environmental Science from Umaine and an M.A. in Theology from Bangor Theological Seminary, Andrew Geaghan returned to the family business with the goal of promoting and building up the craft beer culture within the pub. With the addition of Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company in December 2011, Geaghan’s Pub has seen a major transformation and growth in business. In this time, social media has played a large roll in our metered and intentional growth and development.

SMB Bangor #28: How to respond

October 24, 2013

People are talking about your business on social media. Deciding when you should respond to the positive and the negative – or if you should respond at all – is one of the toughest (but most important) parts of a social media plan.

For our November breakfast, we brought together an all-star panel (including a few featured at the SMBBGR Awards) from a variety of businesses and organizations. They provided their thoughts about when responding is a good idea and some best practices for your responses.

Our panelists were Carolyn Callahan of WABI TV5, Jason Clay of Governor’s Restaurant, Ben Sprague of the Bangor City Council and Means Investment Company, and Mark Nason of NESCom and WHSN. The panel was moderated by Justin Russell, web developer at Sephone Interactive Media and creator of Bangor events site rebangor.com.

Ready for this week’s Tuesday night social?

September 16, 2013

It’s almost here! We normally only send out one email notification for each event, but we’ve had a couple of additions we really wanted to share about this week’s very special event! We think it will be a great chance to meet and have actually talk with some of the people you see online every day. Amazing!

Here’s the deal.

Since this is different than our normal SMB routine, we want to make sure everyone knows the details. September’s social hour is Tuesday, September 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center. (That’s either today or tomorrow, depending on when you read this!) There will be a cash bar (and some food, of course). Reserve your ticket now to attend!

Thanks to Darling’s!

A very special event deserves a very special event sponsor. We’re really happy to have Darling’s along for the ride this month. On Friday, September 27th, they’ll be having a special free showing of “Revenge of the Electric Car” at the Bangor Opera House. There will be complimentary local food, beer, and wine at the screening, and 50 attendees will win a date night on Darling’s! Pretty good deal, right? Reserve your free passes now and share the Facebook event with your friends!

See you at the Cross Center!

We’re so excited about our after-hours Social Media Breakfast! Did we mention there’s going to be a social media scavenger hunt? Did we mention the bacon-y take-home goodies from Governor’s? Well, those are happening, too. We really hope we’ll see you at the Cross Center; don’t forget to reserve your ticket!

SMB Bangor #27: Social media social hour at the Cross Insurance Center

September 11, 2013

We’re mixing it up this month to celebrate the opening of the Cross Insurance Center. Join us for a special Tuesday evening event where you can finally meet and mingle with the people you see and talk with online every day!

Instead of having a traditional speaker, we want to let you socialize in one of the beautiful new areas of the Cross Insurance Center. We’ll have a few activities to keep things interesting, and of course we’ll have food on hand.

Whether or not this will be your first event at the Cross Insurance Center, join us! Can’t wait to see you for this relaxed after-hours event on Tuesday.

If you can’t see the ticket form above, visit the event page on Eventbrite.
