Nominations open for the 2013 SMBBGR Awards

May 10, 2013

Social Media Breakfast Bangor turns two in June! To celebrate our anniversary, we’re holding the second round of SMBBGR Awards. We had a fantastic group of winners last year, and we want to honor more people in the area who are doing social media right!

Our awards will be held during our June 6th breakfast. Before then, we need to nominate people for each of our award categories, and we need to vote to see who will win. That’s where you can help!

The first step is to suggest people who you believe are good candidates for each of our award categories. Between now and Wednesday, May 15th at noon, please nominate Bangor-area businesses and individuals for the following awards:

    • The Faceplanking Award: Who’s the most creative with their content? You see a new post or tweet that makes you smile and tell all your friends. It’s impossible to resist sharing the stuff that the recipient of the Faceplanking Award posts. (2012 winner: Sarah Smiley)
    • The Hashtagger Award: Who is the go-to person for their industry thanks to social media? Who has been able to build their reputation and expertise on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other networks enough so that their name is synonymous with the work they do? (2012 winner: Carolyn Callahan)
    • The @ Award: Posting’s one thing, but engaging with your audience is another. The @ Award winner is always there with a reply or more info when someone interacts. Who’s the best at staying in touch with their own social media crowd on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks? (2012 winner: Jessica Lothian)
    • The 0-60 Award: Where’d they come from? Whether it’s a new business or a seasoned social media user who really took center stage on social media, the 0-60 Award winner has shown the power of generating conversation and buzz. (2012 winner: Suz Stephenson)
    • The Instabacon Award: Whether it’s through crafty Instagram photos or behind-the-scenes YouTube videos, the winner of this award is a master of integrating photos and videos into their social media world. Who makes a picture or video worth a thousand words? (2012 winner: Mark Nason)

We know last year’s winners are still doing great things, but we’re going to let a new batch of nominees compete for the crowns this year. Please nominate as many people and companies as you like for each category; you can nominate even if you’ve never attended a breakfast.

We’ll post a final list of nominees after nominations close next week. After that it’ll be up to everyone to pick the winner in each category! We’ll announce the 2013 SMBBGR Award winners at our June breakfast.

Thanks for helping us with our awards! We can’t wait to see you on June 6th. Until then, go nominate!

SMB Bangor #22: SEO for sites and social

April 2, 2013

We hear a lot about how important it is for your company to appear at the top of search engine results, but it can be tough to separate the hype from the tips that will make your online presence search engine-friendly. For our April breakfast, Scott Traylor from Sephone Interactive Media talked about some of the guidelines to follow to give your site an advantage in search.

Scott Traylor is a founding partner of Sephone Interactive Media and provides search consulting services to clients both large and small.  He is also the Director of the WebMedia Program at the New England School of Communications where he has been teaching a course in Search Engine Marketing for many years being one of the first to offer such a course by an accredited higher education institution in the State of Maine.

SMB Bangor #21: Fun with Foursquare

March 5, 2013

Have you heard your social media friends mention Foursquare, but you’re not really sure what it’s all about? Or have you given it a try and decided it’s not for you? Let us try to convince you otherwise. (And no, we’re not talking about the schoolyard game with the ball.) Bangor’s own Mayor of Everything, Gibran Graham, was on hand to explain what Foursquare’s all about, why it can be a great tool for everyone, and why you should check it out and start checking in.

Gibran Graham is the Executive Director of BangPop!, bringing you events ranging from the SnowCon Gaming Convention to the youth-focused Kid Central Festival to the music-and-more West Market Festival. He also lends his hand to an unreasonably large number of committees around town and spends time tending the stacks at the Briar Patch in downtown Bangor.

SMB Bangor #19: Legal issues in social media

December 27, 2012

Social media gives your company new ways to reach and connect with your customers. But in this new virtual business space, there are some very real legal issues to consider and remember in order to protect your business and its reputation.

For our first Social Media Breakfast of 2013, we welcomed Hunter Umphrey from Largay Law Offices, P.A. He talked about some important legal cases involving businesses and Facebook. He was joined by Chris Largay, President and Managing Partner, to discuss how your business can create a social media policy to deal with some of the trickier issues of posting information and interacting with your customers.

Largay Law Offices, P.A., specializes in personal, business, and real estate matters at their full-service firm in Bangor and Old Town, and throughout Maine. Since the firm’s founding in 1996, they have led numerous cases through jury trial, worked on high-profile cases and hearings, and have helped businesses prosper by serving as a resource for legal matters.

SMB Bangor #18: The social media marketing highway

November 26, 2012

Social media allows your business to attract customers and generate buzz in brand new ways. But how can you step outside of what you do from day to day in a way that will let social media work to your company’s advantage?

If you’ve been on Facebook or Twitter lately, you’ve likely seen shots of friends in a Darling’s photo booth at a concert or event. You also might have heard tales of the Darling’s ice cream truck giving away free frozen treats in greater Bangor. How (and why) did a company known for selling vehicles for over 100 years enter the world of photography and ice cream? And how can what they’ve learned help your business use social media more effectively?

Matt Smith has been the Marketing and BDC Manager at Darling’s for just over five years. He works with a team of four to represent seven Darling’s locations covering 15 different brands. While maintaining a strong presence in traditional advertising like newspaper, radio and print, Darling’s is on the forefront of new media marketing in the state of Maine. They have earned national recognition within the automotive industry by using new and innovative ways to promote themselves and their products on Facebook and through various community outreach efforts.

SMB Bangor #17: In the cloud

October 23, 2012

Telecom companies, software companies, and IT firms are all talking about “The Cloud” these days, but what is it really and what does it mean for small business owners? The truth is, most of us are already using the cloud in our daily jobs as marketers and businesspeople, and we don’t even know it. Moving your business from using a few cloud computing tools to embracing it as our primary IT toolkit can have a big impact on our productivity and bottom line.

Trevor Jones and Brad Dormanen from GWI explained the basic concepts of cloud computing and some of the key benefits to Maine small businesses. They explained how cloud computing can save businesses money and give small companies access to software tools previously only available to big companies. Brad and Trevor also discussed the basic components your business needs to be “cloud ready” and outlined some key things to think about when getting started in cloud computing.

SMB Bangor #16: Social media happy hour

September 30, 2012

For October’s “breakfast”, we’re moving to the evening for a special social media happy hour. We’ll be taking over the new Barrel Room at the Sea Dog to talk everyone’s two favorite topics: social media and beer!

Our October after-work gathering features two speakers who know a thing or two about the topic. We’ll hear from the Sea Dog’s Kelly Breingan about some of their new additions and how they’ve gotten the word out in the area. We’ll also welcome Chad Lothian to show us Untappd, an amazing service in the social media space to help you tally and track your favorite brews. (Chad’s logged 1355 unique beers on Untappd… so far.)

Instead of the normal breakfast buffet included in your ticket price, we’ll have plenty of great hors d’oeuvres, including some nods to breakfast (yes, including some bacon). Of course, the Sea Dog will also have their brews available if you’re in the mood to buy some drinks.

If you’ve ever wanted to attend a Social Media Breakfast without having to set your alarm early, or if you’ve wanted to see the Sea Dog’s Barrel Room, this is the month to join us! (If you can’t make our evening get-together, don’t worry; we’ll be back to our normal time in November.)

If you can’t see the ticket form above, register on our Eventbrite page.

SMB Bangor #15: To pin or not to pin

July 24, 2012

You asked for it, and we’re making it happen! We’re doing an entire breakfast devoted to using Pinterest for business, and we’re bringing in one of the most visually appealing businesses in Bangor to talk about it: Sweetest Thing Weddings. Amber Small will talk about some of the ways to attract pinners to your business and some of the rules of the road to keep in mind when you’re building your brand on Pinterest.

Amber Small, an SMBBGR Instabacon Award nominee, is co-owner of Sweetest Thing Weddings, a Maine wedding and event planning company in Bangor. Sweetest Thing also operates a boutique floral shop, Sweetest Thing Studio, located on Columbia Street in downtown Bangor. Her weddings have been featured in the New York Times & Style Me Pretty. She’s a well-known, active participant in the Maine social media scene.

But wait! There’s more! We love door prizes at SMBBGR. This month, Rich Brooks has been kind enough to send along a free digital pass to Agents of Change Digital Marketing Conference on September 14th for us to give to one lucky attendee. The digital passes are great for us northerners; it gives you access to live streaming and recorded video from the conference without having to make the drive to Portland.

See you at breakfast!
