SMB Bangor #59: Adventure Blogging in 2017

May 18, 2017

Danielle Dorrie and Willow Sherwood of Love Maine Adventures (#lovemaineadventures) have turned their passion for outdoor exploration into blogging and social media success. They are creatively using the platform to highlight things to eat, drink, see, and do as well as hike, camp, ski, and other outdoor activities.   Come and listen as they share how to create a successful blog and brand in 2017!

Danielle Dorrie moved to Maine from Florida in 2010 in a quest for seasons, snow, fall, and adventure, and she met Willow soon thereafter.  Danielle was born and raised in Clearwater, Florida, went to college in Orlando at UCF, and then moved down to Key West Florida, where she managed a restaurant and spent as much time exploring as possible, including boating, drinking, eating, and scuba diving. Her love for adventure was undeniable at an early age – her quest for knowledge and always knowing “why” and “how” would constantly get her in to trouble. Coincidentally, her high school superlative was “Most Mischievous”. She’s a night own by nature, but has adjusted well to Willow’s 4 am wake up adventure calls, because let’s be honest – that’s what REALLY matters. She lives with her long time love, Matt, who occasionally adventures and is totally ok with being home on the couch while she’s out scaling mountains, and her three cat furbabies, Tink, Blackie, and Wiley. Yes, she’s a crazy cat lady, who loves wine, and has cat wine in stock. (FMI on that – just look for the #deepthoughtsbydd).

Willow Sherwood, is a full-time single mom and professional and part-time adventure seeker (full-time adventure dreamer).  A first generation Mainer, she grew up in northern Waldo County and has lived in Farmington, Portland, Burlington, VT and is back in Waldo County.  The draw to the mountains and sea has always been strong ever since she was little where she spent her youth hiking in Acadia National Park and the Camden Hills with her parents.  In college she spent her time skiing and hiking in Western Maine and Vermont where her love of winter flourished.  When she’s not with her son, she spends her time finding new ways to make the most of Maine and New England and be outside as much as possible in every season.  She’s also a Furmom and shares custody of a big gorgeous Weimaraner named Gunnar – he’s featured on her IG often.

SMB Bangor #58: Adding Video to Your Social Media Mix

February 22, 2017

With the amount of stuff posted online every day, it’s important to know how to make your content stand out – and video has become a crucial way to make it happen. For March’s Social Media Breakfast we’re talking about how you can add some video to your own social media messaging and hearing from a company that uses video to attract attention and have some fun.

We’ll start out with Adam Osborne of Osborne Media. Adam will talk about the technical side of creating compelling video, including how to light, frame, and capture sound with stuff you probably already have. He’ll also discuss editing tips to keep people engaged with easily digestable and effective content.

We’ll also hear from Pat Lemieux, the Director of Marketing at C&L Aviation. Whether it’s tying up their CEO or catching a t-rex on hidden camera, C&L creates memorable video that’s fun for aviators and everyone else. He’ll talk about how video has become an important part of C&L’s marketing strategy.

Erich Herbert will present on the concept of sponsored content; describing what it is and how it can help boost a brand’s visibility.

Sarah Cottrell aka Housewife Plus is the Audience Manager at the BDN where she oversees the blog network of 180+ active bloggers. She is also a widely known parenting blogger for Scary Mommy, Huffington Post, Momtastic, and Hearst Digital Media and she has appeared on NPR and the TODAY Show. SMB Bangor #56: Video Storytelling for Business

October 26, 2016

How To Generate New Business, Improve ROI, and Turn Customers Into Raving Fans

Please note the change of venue for this breakfast. We’ll be holding the event at COESPACE in Downtown Bangor.

Not every item in your social media and digital marketing toolkit can fascinate and resonate with your community as much as a well crafted and produced video. Telling stories with video increases engagement, triggers social sharing and gives people a reason to talk about you as well as the subject of your video online and offline. Participants of this session in just an hour will learn about:

  • Video production methods.
  • How to attract retail and business customers by sharing success stories using video.
  • What tools and software to use if you don’t want to exceed a $100 budget.
  • What is ROI of the video storytelling initiative and why it’s no longer an option.

Yury Nabokov is the Innovation & Digital Strategy Manager for Machias Savings Bank, where he serves as a strategist and executioner with regards to digital marketing, user experience and actionable data. He is responsible for growth and adoption of digital and mobile banking solutions across the bank’s network.

SMB Bangor #55: Business in a Snap

August 23, 2016

Social Media Breakfast Bangor is back with a conversation about Snapchat!

Stories and video have emerged on multiple social media platforms as the way to interact on a personal level with your followers. How are organizations in the Bangor region using stories and video to successfully engage with followers? We’ve asked Kate Hills of ERA Dawson Realty to share her use and success with video, stories, and Snapchat.

Kate Hills has been working with the ERA Dawson Bradford Team since 2011 and is currently an Associate Broker. She was born in New Jersey but considers herself a Mainer. She resides in Hermon, Maine with her husband and their two children. In her free time, Kate volunteers at her children’s schools and helps care for people with disabilities in her home. She serves on the Greater Bangor Association of Realtors and a director, Fusion Steering Committee and currently is the chair for Fusion Bangor Sports.

SMB Bangor #54: Hashtags 101

March 31, 2016

For April’s Social Media Breakfast we’re going back to basics to talk about a social media fundamental: hashtags. The SMBBGR organizers will tag team to cover everything you need to know about the # you see in posts and tweets around the web, including:

Why do people use hashtags?

How do I add a hashtag?

Who owns a hashtag?

How can I see what people have posted with a hashtag?

How do I choose which hashtag to use?

They’ll also give real-life examples of how hashtags can be used to keep tabs of an event or campaign, and there will be plenty of time to answer any questions you may have about these often misunderstood tools.

Join us for the first SMB of the spring to learn how hashtags can help your social media presence grow from the ground up! #winning

SMB Bangor #53: 360 degrees of social media for nonprofits

February 19, 2016

We hear stories all the time about how big brands and corporations are using social media to strengthen their image and reach out to customers. But can nonprofits be a part of the social media party? This month we’ll welcome Pat Lemieux of the American Heart Association to talk about how nonprofits can use social media to their advantage. His presentation will cover how to use social media strategies and tactics to enhance events, volunteerism, donations, sponsorship, media coverage and board engagement for nonprofits.

After just shy of a decade at BDN Maine, Pat Lemieux now works as a Corporate Events Director for the American Heart Association. His experience involves live events, social media, sponsorship and donation acquisition, audience development, online marketing as well as traditional marketing and media. Pat blogs about business and social media on LinkedIn and parenting on his personal blog manchild, which can be found on bangordailynews.com. He also co-hosts a social media-focused podcast called the Social Dig Podcast which can be found at socialdigpodcast.com and on iTunes.

SMB Bangor 52: Social media <3 websites

February 3, 2016

February is the month of love, and for our February breakfast we’re looking at a perfect match in the tech world: social media and websites. Social media is a great tool to put your message in front of the eyes of people around your area – or around the world. But it can also be a useful way to drive visitors to your website to buy products, donate, subscribe to a newsletter, attend an event, or more by using carefully crafted calls to action.

Monique Bouchard and Leo Edmiston-Cyr from Rainstorm, Inc., will discuss how social media and websites can intertwine. Learn how you can use a call to action on your favorite social media network to inspire the people looking to visit your site and learn more or follow up. They’ll lead by example by showing how the Ocean River Institute’s integration of social and website drives successful advocacy for environmental changes.
